A Message from President O.C. Ferrell:   AMS Publishing Code of Ethics

The Academy of Marketing Science Publishing Code of Ethics has been approved by the Executive Council.  AMS has addressed major issues faced by publishers, editors, authors and the academic community. Specific issues addressed include conducting research, authorship, plagiarism, conflicts of interest, human subjects, along with respondents and reviewing. Authorship disputes have been the most frequent ethical issue over the last few years across all academic disciplines. Issues include who meets the requirements of authorship, author order on the manuscripts, and the debates around the value of graduate students assisting in research and qualification for authorship. The other issues addressed in the code focus on documented concerns about ethics in publishing.

The code was developed as an advisory guideline based on existing best practices that are used by various participants in the scientific publishing process. The goal is to assist in informing and promoting integrity in publishing. As pressure for elite publications increases globally, there is much more diversity in attitudes toward publishing ethics. Trust in the integrity of publications is based on principles and standards of conduct that ensure high quality scientific findings. While there are some publishing codes, there has been no publishing code of ethics designed specifically for the marketing discipline. In addition, academic associations sometimes have conflicting standards. The AMS code was developed over the last year with input from a committee, the Board of Governors, the Academic Council and the editors of JAMS and AMS Review. The code will be reviewed on annual basis and comments or questions about the code are welcomed. The Committee on Publishing Ethics (COPE) https://publicationethics.org provides an excellent source for additional guidelines and cases related to publishing ethics.
